one, two and Rin’s page
Personality:
Rin is, by all means, an idiot. There are times when other characters in the series honestly have no idea what to do with him, because the things he says and does are that ridiculous. In the first chapter he tells Shirou to peel his eyes out, instead of keep his eyes peeled because he’s that terrible with language, and makes similar mistakes later that cause others much confusion. Yet, he refuses to study. His poor brother, Yukio, is stuck with the hassle of trying to talk Rin into doing his homework, or even just reading to prepare him for the future--instead, Rin hides comics in his books and reads those. He’s irresponsible, and in a lot of cases immature, even if he wants to be seen otherwise.
He runs his mouth too quickly -- and even more than that, he’s quick to hit someone he thinks is being unreasonable. For example, even in the first few chapters he lashes out at a group of children who hurt some pigeons. He’s furious about it, though this is partly because he is fond of animals. Even so, Rin’s attitude is largely because of how he was raised. He was raised by whom he believed to be only a priest; however, it becomes apparent that Shirou, his foster father - so to speak - is actually an exorcist. He kills demons for a living. The way this ties into Rin’s life? Well, it turns out that Shirou had actually conspired with another fellow to keep Rin and his brother safe because they are the offspring of Satan himself. Rin, in particular, is labelled ‘Son of Satan’ as he inherited Satan’s powers, while Yukio - the weaker of the two - does not seem to have the same powers as his brother (or at least no where near the same kind of level). Of course, it took 15 years for Rin to have any idea about this.
At this point, Rin’s life is a picture of instability. He’s just found out he’s a demon--but not only a demon, he’s Satan’s son. He finds out he’s been lied to. He’s confused. Scared. So he does the only thing he’s truly good at--lashing out. He uses his fist as well as his mouth, telling Shirou to never say he’s his father again. Sadly, that only makes things worse, and it’s where Rin’s inability to think of consequences before actions blooms. Shirou becomes possessed by Satan, and in turn, Shirou dies from the force of having Satan in his body. Rin’s an emotional person, he wears his heart of his sleeve, so seeing this devastates him--especially when he finds out that it’s kind of his fault as he said such horrid things to Shirou. Guilt eats at him for a while, and in a way it’s understandable why he’d believe it was his fault.
However, on the bright side, there is a much more positive side to Rin and that’s his ability to believe in the best possible outcome. When a disease plagues a city and a child is missing, he promises the child’s mother that they’ll get her baby back. Yukio scolds him for this, as it’s not certain, but Rin is adamant that they’ll find this one child. And honestly? He wouldn’t give up until he did, either.
Rin is carefree--much more carefree than his brother. When his classmates find out the truth about him he tries to laugh it off by hiding his tail, smiling and joking, even while his friends are in fear, in enough fear or in Bon’s case anger, to walk away and leave him to his fate. It makes a lot of sense though, as Rin is suddenly stuck with all this responsibility. He could fill up a city with flames if he wanted to. In fact, the order of exorcists in the series do keep a close watch on his progress to make sure something like that doesn’t happen. To Rin, it’s almost insulting, especially when he’s trying so hard to be an exorcist. Not only that, but he feels trapped. He might joke around to try and cheer the others up--but when it comes to himself? He kind of sucks at cheering himself up.
The problems he has to deal with are big ones. They’re unusual. He feels alone even though Yukio does everything for Rin anyway... It’s just difficult and he doesn’t deal with that all that well. Not only that, but he also has a terrible habit of bearing it all on his own. For example, he chases after Amaimon on his own, knowing that he’d be the only one able to do something and it is him that Amaimon wants. He doesn’t trust the others to work with him on that, because he’d rather not put them in that danger for his sake. It stems a lot from how Shirou died, honestly, and that inability to control the guilt that follows someone getting injured because of him.
The biggest aspect of Rin’s personality is his ability to get into trouble and cause problems--especially for Yukio. He’s too reckless and will rush headlong into situations without thinking. He ends up close to the chopping block multiple times because of his actions. The only time this was not the case is at the beginning when Mephisto comes to pick him up, as at that point he ends up threatened just because of who he is. His will himself to live and ‘kick Satan’s ass’ for what he did to Shirou overrules everything, however. Still, another time where it’s revealed he will be executed (his canon point for haven), he’s gone out of control after losing his temper. Yet again, this feeds back into the father figure and his guilt. He hears Bon and his father arguing, and Bon tells his father that he’ll never accept him, and Rin just cannot accept that. He sneaks away from Shura before she can stop him, and tells Bon to take it back--he resorts to violence in the end because he feels so strongly about it.
Really, at that point, he’s quite lucky he had Shura to pin him down with an imprisonment spell. It’s because of that he ends up being told he’ll be executed, but it also stops him from going out of control earlier. It’s happened before--it could happen again. And that is always the danger with Rin. Despite this, he accepts what he is. He pulls the sword that holds his heart in the beginning, freeing his demon form. He accepts the flames and uses them to help others, while Yukio clearly despises it and tells him to stop relying on it all so much. It’s easy. It helps. And he can’t really consider all the possible bad outcomes either.
There are times when these flames really do bring the worst consequences, and when Shiemi and the other classmates saw them--saw Rin with them for the first time--it made them fear or hate him all the more. The biggest change was with Shiemi, who knew he was a demon already but didn’t know he was Satan’s son. Normally she was accepting of matters like these, but once Rin had gone out of control she really did fear him. That hurt Rin a lot, and it’s partly when Shiemi ran off in fear that he began to realise just what kind of baggage he was carrying. Sure, there were indicators before, but this really shook him. Shiemi hating him--or being so scared by him that she might as well hate him--really set him back.
Of course, there is the opposite side to this as well. Once Shiemi was used to that side of him, she was also the first to accept him and his flames. Rin uses the flames to vanquish the Impure King and Shiemi tells everyone that his flames are okay. She says they’re warm, but not hot. They carry Rin’s feelings. She understands him (in Certain Areas anyway) much more than others--sometimes even more than his own brother does. She trusts him, and that’s such a huge thing for Rin.
As Yukio has to dedicate so much time to keeping Rin safe, Shura is pretty much seen as an extra pair of hands to keep him in line for a while. Then again, there’s more to her motives than that as well. Shura trains him. She keeps him both in line and on his toes, and she does so somewhat from Mephisto’s guidance. Between the two of them he’s kind of stuck going on a path to sorting himself out and controlling the flames. However, at the same time Shura does try to make sure he keeps himself in check whereas Mephisto encourages the opposite. Wonder why. (eyeroll) BUT when all is said and done, they are pretty decent friends - and it’s pretty obvious that Shura, despite her bitchings, does have a soft spot for him as a guardian figure. Rin definitely tries to follow her teachings as well as she seems to understand better than Yukio that he just can’t learn from a book.
Speaking of Mephisto... this is one person he really can’t bring himself to trust--even if he does have a shelter over his head and a path to getting what he wants because of him. He’s dumb, yes, but he’s smart enough to realise that Mephisto has too many tricks up his sleeve and can tell there’s a motive behind some of the things he does. It won’t affect him in haven due to his canon point, but later on in the manga he is told that Mephisto is actually his half brother, being one of his older brothers produced by Satan. He learns about his ability to manipulate space and time and just how powerful he actually is. The fact that Mephisto tells him, as well, shows just how much he is putting into Rin’s abilities for the future.
And then, there is Amaimon. Amaimon is only brought into the picture as someone to force Rin’s abilities to come to light. He’s asked to fight him, and really for the first few times he’s bored out of his skull. It’s when Rin actually draws his sword and accepts who he is that Amaimon gets interested... and then it’s a downhill slide. He becomes obsessed with fighting him really, and that’s something that Rin hates when he’s trying to behave. In fact, later in the manga Mephisto has to trap Amaimon and impale him to keep him in place when they’re watching Rin - just so that he doesn’t lash out. Though that is something that Rin would feel guilty for, sadly..
Abilities/Powers:
- Rin is super strong and has even been shown to be lifting up a car with his bare hands
- Rin has something called ‘blue flames’ which can be used both in his human form as well as his demon form. However, going into his demon form means that the flames are much more intense and can injure easily. He has less control over them in this form. Likewise, in his human form he has been shown to light candles by concentrating the warmth to the specific spots. Later in the manga he uses these flames to burn away the Impure King (one of the major demons) and the disease/bacteria he possesses
- Rin is extremely fast.
Items/Weapons:
- His sword - Kurikara
- The hair grip he got from Bon
- A volume of manga (which will become wordless once in haven)

Sample Entry Two:
So according to the votes from the Church Inspection Committee... Because an imprisonment spell was used-- It’s been decided that Okumura Rin is to be executed.
The words spin in Rin’s mind for a moment as he tries to process what Mephisto is telling him--telling them as Shura and Yukio are there too--but it all happens too fast. He feels his body jerk, the hand from the ridiculous coocoo trap Mephisto made reaching to grab him. His sword is just at his fingertips, almost coming loose when ... bam...!!
He wakes up in Haven.
He’s drenched in a cold sweat as he sits up in his bed, feeling sick to his stomach and shaky from what just happened. Though he’s not entirely sure it did anymore. This place is unlike what he’d expected anyway, unless Mephisto’s idea of imprisonment meant sending him to another dorm for the time being. Though they were in Kyoto, weren’t they? Rin takes a moment to realise that and shakes his head. He stares at his hands, lets his eyes drift to his tail that’s flopped on the bed next to him. He’s not really sure what is real and what isn’t real anymore.
“Where am I...?” His lips barely move as he slides off the bed (and almost stumbles over his sword that’s on the floor. yep.) and looks out the window. This definitely isn’t Kyoto, he knows that much... So was he taken elsewhere after all?
It’s then that he realises that Shura and Yukio aren’t there either. Panic sets in. His hand reaches for the handle to his sword, pulling it up so he can carry it----and he rushes right out the door. He needs to get outside. He needs to know if they’re both safe and what is going on.
“Yukio?!?!” It’s the first name he thinks to call, even as his heart thuds painfully and he has no idea if he’s alone or not. He has no idea if he’s trapped. No idea if anyone is going to chase him, just like they had in the past. His identity was something that was forbidden by exorcists, it’s something that demons looked out for to take him away and back to his so-called Real father... He’d tried so hard too... Tried so hard to control the flames and it had just come to this.
To execution.
He doen’t stop until he’s in front of the billboard. He hasn’t yelled in a while either, just concentrated on running and running until his legs give out and some of the anger fades. When it does, all he faces is sorrow.
What if he’d never really control the flames? What then? He’d taken one step forward and five steps back... Maybe it was better this way. Maybe that’s why he was here... Wherever here was.
Before he thinks about it his fist punched the pole holding the billboard up, eyes dilating in anger and fear. He didn’t want to die. He didn’t want to die. He didn’t want to die.
“I want to go home...” In the end, even after everything he’d been through, he was only 15. It’s unfair. After pain swells up in his hand he holds it close and slides down the pole, leaning back on it. “I want it all to end already.” It’s then when his thoughts take a turn for the worse--when doubt blossoms in his mind and he starts to wonder--
Maybe he should have died from the start.
